TUESDAY WEATHER: There’s a 60% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. It’ll also be breezy, with wind gusts to 20 mph. Otherwise, we’ll be mostly sunny and hot. Temperatures will be near 90°, and the heat index will be well into the 90s. Any remnants of the thunderstorms will dissipate quickly after sunset, as we drop to about 66°.

We’ll be dry and somewhat “cooler” the rest of the week. We’re looking at sunny conditions with temperatures topping out around 83° both Wednesday and Thursday.

THE WEEKEND: Rain chances will return this weekend. Friday will be dry, with a high of about 85°. Then we’ll see about a 50/50 chance of showers and storms both Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures will be closer to 80°, especially Sunday.

FURTHER OUT: Next week may be a bit hotter than this week. Overall, though, the next several weeks continue to look pretty normal for this time of year — hot and humid, with about average rainfall. There are no real extremes one way or the other that are showing up on the horizon. These are the dog days of summer, which means the weather is mostly sticky and sultry.

RIVER CONDITIONS: For the first time in weeks, streamflows are getting pretty close to normal. The Big South Fork River is flowing around 400 cubic feet per second (cfs), and Clear Fork is around 80 cfs. Both are slightly above average, but within range of what we typically see this time of year. Water clarity remains subpar (Big South Fork) but is improving, and is better on the upper reaches (Clear Fork). Afternoon water temperatures are topping out around 80°.

TROPICAL WATCH: We’re entering the time of year when a tropical storm that makes its way into the Gulf can have a big impact on our weather in Tennessee. However, the quiet start to the hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin has been well-forecasted this year, and that doesn’t look to change anytime soon. No tropical activity is expected for at least the next 7 days.
