PIONEER | Work has resumed on the TN Dept. of Transportation’s truck-climbing lane on S.R. 63 here.
The project, located in western Campbell County between the Pioneer post office and Interstate 75’s Exit 141, was paused while TDOT switched contractors mid-stream. As previously reported by the Independent Herald last spring, TDOT awarded the project’s completion to Rogers Group.
The project includes a 12-ft. east-bound truck-climbing lane that extends seven-tenths of a mile from the Stinking Creek Road intersection, as well as a reconfiguration of the S.R. 297 intersection to include turn lanes. Work originally began on the project in 2024.
The project is one of two undertaken by TDOT to expedite improvements to the S.R. 63 corridor between Scott and Campbell counties in lieu of an original plan to widen the highway to four lanes from Huntsville to Caryville. Public meetings were held within that scope in the Spring of 2007 and again in the Spring of 2012. TDOT also completed an environmental assessment for the project. However, the agency ultimately opted to place the corridor in what it terms its “Expedited Project Delivery” program, using spot improvements rather than widening the highway.
The first project under the changed scope included improvements to the intersections of S.R. 456 and Norma Road near Huntsville, including the stretch of highway in front of Fairview School.
An estimated completion date for the resumed project was not immediately available from TDOT.
